Installation: Symbiosis
SYMBIOSIS is a collaboration between Felicia van Os and Nelly Gaskin. The work is inspired by the mycorrhizal network, the underground fungal network which allows trees to communicate, share nutrients and send warning signals to other trees. Five tall sculptural elements in the installation honor the trees known as “mother trees”, those that sustain younger or weaker trees by sharing their nutrients via this network. From a wider perspective, we, too, are a part of this network. Cooperative symbiosis is an important concept for our human community, for human-nature mutualism and interspecies survival. The quality of our interaction with that which surrounds us is of critical importance for communal, and even global, well-being.
